Becoming a Tutor with the MSU Denver Afterschool Program:

Metropolitan State University of Denver’s Center for Urban Education (CUE) is seeking Mentors, Academic Intervention Tutors, and Enrichment Program Facilitators for the MSU Denver Afterschool program that are offered in  Denver Public Schools identified as high-needs:  Kunsmiller Creative Arts Academy and  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Early College.  The MSU Denver Afterschool Program serves urban youth through four primary goals: (1) Increase academic achievement in mathematics, reading, and writing; (2) Increase school participation and engagement; (3) Increase college and career readiness; (4) Increase parent engagement in their child’s educational journey.

Work Schedule:

• September 2022 – May 2023
• The MSU Denver Afterschool Program will begin September 19, 2022 and resume in the Spring beginning Jan. 17, 2023
• A minimum of two days per week at your site and attend a weekly staff meeting and supervisor check-in (approximately 7.5 hours a week) and up to 15 hours per week depending on your availability

Starting hourly rate: $18/hour

Responsibilities:

• Meet students at the school and go over their assignments or credit recovery needs in the applicable subject area
• Monitor student attendance and academic progress in Grade and Attendance Trackers
• Work closely with tutoring team to identify issues students are having and develop appropriate solutions
• Assist with the planning and facilitating of daily enrichment activities
• Work with Tutoring team to maintain a supportive, safe and clean program environment
• Supervise and engage students in learning during program activities including snack-time and when on field trips
• Communicate with Central program staff and School Liaisons regularly
• Attend paid staff meetings and training sessions

• Demonstrated commitment to serving high-need urban youth and families
• Ability to build relationships with youth, fellow tutors, and teachers  in a community of learning
• Ability to engage and motivate students
• Able to implement culturally responsive instructional and pedagogical strategies aligned with policies, protocols, and practices of the schools, their teachers and staff
• Dependable, responsible, and exhibits professionalism and appropriate boundaries
• Flexibility to adapt to program modifications needed to  continuously improve programming
• Special consideration for candidates who are bilingual in Spanish
• Special consideration for pre-service teaching experience and content knowledge in one or more of the following areas: math, language arts, science, and other academic content areas

Becoming a Summer Camp Mentor:

The Center for Urban Education at the Metropolitan State University of Denver hires college student mentors who will support summer campers in active engagement in sessions that are focused on integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, Art or Mathematics (STEAM) and Language Arts (Reading, Writing, Oral Language) with critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork.

Session Dates/Hourly Rate:

• All positions are currently closed and hiring for Summer 2023 will begin in April of 2023
• All tutors will be required to attend an orientation, trainings and various de-brief sessions throughout each of the camps (paid).

Primary Roles and Responsibilities:

The goals for the CUE Summer Camps are to motivate participating students to care about their learning and build their aspirations for college and career attainment. Mentors will collaborate with college professors to support instruction during classes. Mentors will serve as the primary adviser, counselor, and cheerleader to students, including:

• Help campers build a vision for high school success and future college participation
• Pass on knowledge, insights, and expertise about graduating HS and going to college
• Guide and support students in understanding of knowledge and skills introduced during activities
• Assist youth in setting goals
• Be an active listener
• Encourage campers to aspire to excellence

Becoming a DPS Credit Recovery Tutor:

The Center for Urban Education (CUE) at Metropolitan State University of Denver and the Denver Public Schools (DPS) are collaborating on credit recovery programs during the school year at George Washington High School and during the summer at the regional summer school program. The programs will focus on intervention support and credit recovery in mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies for high school students. CUE will be hiring 30 tutors for DPS’ Summer Credit Recovery Program in April and May of 2023.

CUE is currently hiring credit recovery tutors for George Washington HS for a program that happens during the school day. Hours and times are flexible.

MSU Denver students in all discipline areas may apply, however, we are seeking students with academic backgrounds and content experience in Algebra I and II, Geometry I and II, reading strategies, American Literature, Science courses such as Biology, Chemistry and Earth Science; and Social Studies courses such as U.S. History, Geography, World History.
